Cooling Towers

“Replace the Towers with something we can climb…!”

An excellent debate took place at a crowded meeting on May 9th at Sheffield Town Hall to discuss the proposed public art work to be sited at Tinsley after the demolition of the iconic Cooling Towers. Andrew Skelton, the SCC Public Art Officer spoke about the process and the work of the Steering group, Richard Caborn spoke about his enthusiasm for the themes of Sheffield heritage and football, Tom James had other views on capturing and reflecting the talents of the city in its design and development. The audience comments underlined the affection that Sheffield and Rotherham residents have for the landmark Cooling Towers. There is an enthusiasm for good public art and for cutting edge urban design which is comfortable with its heritage but which also reflects this changing, innovating, city and looks forward to its future. It was good to provide an opportunity for these views to be aired to Andrew Skelton and the members of his steering committee who were present.
